Ceramic

💫 About

What is this network?

The Ceramic Network is a decentralized, worldwide network of nodes running the Ceramic protocol. It provides computation, state transformations, and consensus for all types of data structures stored on the decentralized web. This network enables developers to build secure, trustless, censorship-resistant applications on top of dynamic information without trusted database servers. Ceramic's stream processing allows for the creation, discovery, and querying of data without needing to trust a centralized server or integrate one-off APIs. The network is designed to scale horizontally to handle the world's data, which is orders of magnitude greater than the throughput needed on a financial blockchain.

How can I mine tokens?

As of the current information available, Ceramic may have its own token in the future, but developers have not committed to this plan yet. If it were to launch, it would have a similar role that ether does on Ethereum, as a “gas” token that unlocks network functionality and incentivizes development.

Any geographical restrictions?

Due to Ceramic's permissionless design and unified global network, anyone in the world can openly create, discover, query, and build upon existing data. There are no geographical restrictions mentioned in the available resources.

How can I use the network?

Ceramic can be used to build a variety of applications and services. It can be used to create decentralized identities and portable, user-controlled data storage. It can also be used to create permissionless social networks where content is decentralized and owned by users instead of platforms. Ceramic also supports the development of decentralized publications. Developers can get started with Ceramic by using the Playground app to demo Ceramic in a browser application, or by following the Quick Start guide to learn the basics using the Ceramic CLI.

Who governs this network?

The Ceramic Network is a decentralized, open-source protocol. It is governed by the community of developers and users who contribute to its development and maintenance. The Web 3 product studio, 3Box Labs, created Ceramic and plans to remain a key contributor to the network.

Funding

3Box Labs raised $30 million in its effort to build out the Ceramic Network. The funding round was led by Multicoin Capital and Union Square Ventures. Other backers included Coinbase Ventures, Metacartel, Reciprocal, CoinDesk parent Digital Currency Group, and many more.
